Otherwise known as a ‘dental check up’ – we take a very comprehensive approach to this process.

We use this appointment to thoroughly assess the health and condition of your teeth, any dental restorations you have, your gums, your bite, your saliva, your jaw joints and the soft tissues within your mouth. We carry out an oral cancer screening, a periodontal (gum) screening, dental X-rays and 3D digital scans of your teeth. We often also take clinical photographs of your teeth and your smile.

Saliva testing

As part of your regular oral health evaluations, we will assess your saliva. The level of your saliva can be a valuable indication of your overall health. Dehydration can cause a myriad of general health issues, and a reduction in your saliva flow can be one of the earliest signs of this condition.

We also test the pH of your saliva to assess if it is acidic. Acidity in your mouth can cause erosion of your tooth enamel – once lost, this is irreversible damage that can lead to tooth sensitivity and weakening of your teeth. Acidity in your mouth may also be a sign of increased acidity within your digestive tract. Again, this can have implications for your overall well-being. We take a very holistic approach to your care, and wherever possible, we aim to help your oral health contribute to your overall health and well-being.

Bite analysis

As part of your oral health evaluation, your bite will be assessed. The way in which your upper and lower teeth meet will impact the efficiency of your chewing (which can affect your digestion), and it also impacts the condition of your teeth. If you have areas of your teeth that are worn down, then this may be due either to a poorly functioning bite or a tooth grinding and clenching habit, or possibly abrasive tooth brushing techniques. Either way, your bite will be assessed to see if it is serving you optimally.

Within your mouth, certain teeth are designed to perform certain specific roles – your bite analysis will aid in diagnosing any current or potential future deviation from the ideal. Some people can experience chronic pain, headaches and migraines, and even severe tooth fractures as a result of a poorly functioning bite.
